James Shephard is the main character and the protagonist as well as a survivor of the outbreak in Virus. A mere elementary school student, James struggles to believe that the world is ending in front of his own eyes. After having to escape his school during a mysterious epidemic, James finds himself traveling with an enigmatic group of survivors whom seem to accept him and his dark, secretive past.
Prior to the outbreak, James attended Topeka Central School with his friend Nicole. However, he suffered from physical abuse at home and was told to never speak of it outside of school. According to what he told Cranston, he was beaten by his mother and was once cut several times by his father.

An interesting relationship forms between the two upon meeting. Cranston finds James hiding away in a tree asleep. After waking him, James immediately distrusts him, but reluctantly starts to travel with him once he sees that his friend Nicole is a part of his group.
Cranston and James continues to chat about in private, with James being surprised by Cranston's tale of his little brother dying. James slowly opens up to Cranston and reveals he doesn't want to go home, and talks about his secret abusive home life. Because of this, Cranston agrees to watch over him and the two form a trust between each other.
