Before the outbreak, Ross was a U.S. Army helicopter pilot in Georgia. He also had a wife and several sons.
Ross is present for the reveal that his leader Caesar Martinez died and a new leader will be chosen for the camp. He and the other guards step up when Tara Chambler and the other camp residents become agitated about the reveal of the new camp leadership. Later, he witnesses the aftermath of Meghan Chambler's near death by a zombie.
Ross is seen with the Governor's miltia. Ross and Tara's girlfriend Alisha are ordered to bring out the hostages from the truck. Ross is guarded over Michonne during the prison talks between the Governor and Rick Grimes, armed with a suppressed Uzi submachine gun and a M1911A1 as a side arm. After the negotiation fails, Ross attacks the prison with the others and is soon killed.
